The Norwegian rune poem

Ýr er vetrgrønstr viða; vænt er, er brennr, at sviða.

The yew is the most winter-green of woods; it is wont to singe when it burns.

The Norwegian rune poem is from the 1200s and has one verse per rune. The original is in the public domain; the translations are our own.

Commentary

The last rune in the row, and the strangest: it writes an r sound that only occurred at the end of words, and that was on its way out. The rune row preserved a sound the language was losing.
